Who We Are

Our Story
 

Schaaf Window Co., Inc. began in June of 1959 as Schaaf Glass Co. Started by Fred Schaaf and his son George Sr. as Schaaf Glass Co., The upstart operation was first in Chicago the Evergreen  Park .  The father-son team began as a union glazing contractor for residential buildings. At that time, windows were shipped to either the jobsite or to glass/lumber companies unglazed, and then glazed at those locations by glaziers.

 In the early 1960's, window manufacturers began to make pre-glazed window units.  Still, Schaaf Glass was contracted by Pella Windows to glaze special projects on jobsites in the south suburbs of Chicago.  Schaaf Glass continued to serve the residential contractor by installing mirrors and shower doors and supplying patio doors.   In 1968, when window manufactures began to sell direct to building contractors, Schaaf Glass entered into the commercial glazing market.  

In 1972, George Sr. took over Schaaf Glass Co. and moved it to a new building in Bridgeview.  He also added more steel entry doors and patio doors to get a stronger presence in the residential market.  While Schaaf Glass was supplying buildings with steel entry doors, the customers were complaining about the lack of service from their current window suppliers. So George Sr. Decided to provide builders with windows. In 1974 Schaaf Glass united with Northern Sash and Door (now Norco Windows) out of Hawkins, Wisconsin to supply windows in the south suburbs of Chicago.

As the window sector of the business grew, the company demanded a larger facility. The residential sector of Schaaf Glass moved approximately one mile to it's previous location, and changed it's name to Schaaf Window Co., Inc.   Steady growth through the 80's and 90's has made Schaaf Window Co. the largest independent window company in Illinois, serving the Chicagoland area from the Wisconsin border in the north to Kankakee in the south, and from DeKalb in the west to Northwest Indiana in the east.
